HHSC Gains Settlement With Texas Access Alliance
AUSTIN — The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) today reached a final agreement worth more than $100 million to the state to end its contract with the Texas Access Alliance for eligibility support services.
Under the agreement, the Alliance will forgo $70.9 million in payments for services provided to the state, will pay $20 million in cash and will provide a $10 million credit against future work performed by Maximus. [TAA Settlement]

Heiligenstein to Lead Department of Family and Protective Services
AUSTIN – Health and Human Services Executive Commissioner Albert Hawkins today announced that Anne Heiligenstein, who helped reform the state’s child and adult protective services programs, will be the next commissioner of the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS).
“Anne knows these programs inside and out,” Hawkins said. “She was director of protective services before her expertise took her to the Governor’s Office and then the White House. When she returned to Texas, one of her first tasks was to recommend the changes needed to transform and strengthen our protective services programs. Ike Victims to Get More Food Stamp Benefits in October
AUSTIN – The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has received federal approval to increase the amount of emergency food stamps that many Ike victims will receive in October.
The new policy applies to low-income households eligible for food stamps in the 29 counties declared federal disaster areas after Hurricane Ike. It doesn’t change the income limits for the program, but it does provide eligible families with additional food stamp assistance in October. [Food Stamps]

More Food Stamp Offices Open Along Gulf
AUSTIN – Ten more Gulf Coast area food stamp offices that have been closed since Hurricane Ike are open today. The reopened offices include another Houston location and offices in the Beaumont-Port Arthur area.
Low-income families in disaster areas may be eligible for up to two months of emergency food stamp benefits if they meet income and asset requirements. A family of four earning up to $2,915 this month may qualify for assistance. Applicants will need to provide proof of their identify and address, such as a driver’s license, and will have to answer questions about their income, bank account balances, household and expenses. Audit Confirms HHSC System Calculates Benefits Correctly
